Melexis Introduces the First Miniature Angle Encoder Chip in a Smaller Form Factor

Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announces the MLX90381 AEC-Q100/ISO 26262-qualified miniature angle encoder chip, helping to improve ease of use and reliability in industrial and automotive applications. This angle encoder chip is housed in a small DFN-6 package (dimensions 2 mm × 2.5 mm), enabling the miniaturization of electromechanical systems with sensors. This ASIL compliant solution is programmable at the module level, making it ideal for rotor position detection.

Global microelectronics engineering company Melexis has introduced the MLX90381, a tiny 3D magnetic angle decoder chip. This device combines many advantages, not only small size, but also has a reliable analog output, which can provide sine and cosine signals.

The MLX90381 utilizes Melexis' unique Triaxis® Hall technology for easy rotor position detection. The device can be used for absolute rotational position detection and can measure rotational speeds above 50,000 rpm with its low latency and fast response.

This miniature angle decoder chip not only improves low-speed accuracy and noise performance, but also supports stall detection. The device is suitable for DC, brushless DC (BLDC) and permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) in applications such as electric valves and e-bike motors. At the same time, this angle decoder chip is AEC-Q100 and ISO 26262 (ASIL B SEooC) compliant, making it ideal for safety-related systems in automobiles.

The MLX90381 can be easily paired with the Melexis smart embedded LIN driver chip family. These include driver chips MLX81330/32 (up to 10 W) for direct drive vanes, valves and single coil fans and pumps. In addition, the device can be paired with pre-driver chips MLX81340/44/46 (up to 2000 W) used in electric blowers, engine cooling fans, pumps, window regulators, seat adjusters and sunroofs.

Due to the optional magnetic field axis (X/Y - X/Z - Z/Y), the MLX90381 can realize on-axis position detection as well as off-axis axis pass detection. The sensitivity and filter bandwidth of each axis are directly programmable through the device's I2C interface. A dedicated high-sensitivity version of this miniature angle decoder chip also further suppresses interference from external stray magnetic fields.

                    

The MLX90381 is available in a small DFN-6 package. Only three external capacitors are required to form a complete circuit.
