Amritech has released its signal processing software option-098, adding an upgrade for evaluating PAM4 differential electrical signals to its BERTWave sampling oscilloscope MP2110A.

This new solution supports measurements that conform to the IEEE 802.3 optical module electrical interface standard and speeds up communication in data centers and mobile networks by upgrading the evaluation efficiency of 50G to 400G optical modules using PAM4 technology.

Data centers are currently switching to PAM4 optical modules to cope with the huge increase in traffic on mobile networks. In addition, to meet the need for a simpler flexible network configuration, the PAM4 optical module for communication supports higher communication speeds than traditional NRZ technology, ranging from 50Gbit/s to 800Gbit/s.

The PAM4 optical module supports different rates, and the device supports different types of optical modules. Also, in traditional systems, networking equipment and optical modules are sourced from the same vendor, but the impetus to cut costs is to see users sourcing equipment and modules from different vendors.

In this case, the interconnection between not only optical interfaces but also electrical interfaces must be ensured. Ensuring this interconnection requires a rigorous evaluation based on the IEEE 802.3 PHY layer standard.

To meet these upgraded interconnection requirements while continuing to support PAM4 optical interface measurements, the company has now added support for IEEE 802.3 PAM4 electrical interface measurements to its MP2110A, which many manufacturers use as a sampling oscilloscope for manufacturing optical modules.
